Advantages of diving in the Mexican Caribbean

The Caribbean is normally warm, clear and calm.

In the Summer, the surface can seem like a sheet of glass. Very little tidal action is observed.

Water temperatures average is 28C/82F in the Summer and 25C/77F in the Winter..Sometimes it gets as high as 29C/85F in the summer!

The excellent visibility often exceeds 30m/100ft.

Shipwreck at Playa del Carmen dives!!!

While diving with Phantom Divers in Playa del Carmen you can go to the wreck of Mama Viña, which sits upright in about 96ft of water.

This steel hulled ship was intentionally sunk in 1996 after having suffered extensive damage during a hurricane. Mama Viña is located just south of Xcaret, here you can ind barracuda, jacks, and much more. 

The currents here can be strong at times, however the Mama Viña makes an excellent introduction to wreck diving, especially if you are interested in doing your advanced open water course where it is a requirement.

Although the wreck has recently been sunk, corals have quickly covered most of the surfaces. 

Gloves and a long wetsuit are highly recommended. This is not a difficult dive, but given the depth, and currents, it should be considered an advanced site.

Diving in Cozumel

Cozumel is the Mexican island in the caribbean sea  just 45 minutes off Playa delCarmen. Cozumel in Mayan means “land of the swallow” because of its many native bird species. Its ocean is filled with corals, fish, sea turtles, and much more. The reefs vary from shallow to extremely deep. However, the water is extremely clear so the visibility is perfect, it is really easy to see all the corals and sea life even as a snorkeler.Remember that at Phantom divers we have daily trips to Cozumel Island where you can explore the wonders of their reefs and marine life.

 

Cozumel´s diving speciality is the drift diving or "go with the flow" diving since the currents will push you along the reefs. In Cozumel you can find more than 30 chartered reefs and sites from which to choose; one of the most famous is the vertical wall Santa Rosa with depths from 40 to 130 feet.

Jacques Cousteau, first introduced the world to Cozumel’s reef ; which is the second largest coral reef in the world: the great Mesoamerican Barrier Reef or the Palancar Reef, the system extends all the way from northern Yucatan to Honduras

Cozumel also offers several Mayan archaeological sites. The biggest ones are those at San Gervasio.

Amazing Jellyfish!

While diving in Playa del Carmen you can always fin jellyfish. Jellyfish are invertebrate animals and belong to the phylum Cnidaria. Their body is almost transparent and are formed by 95% water! The three main parts of a jellyfish are :the umbrela that takes the form of  a duomo, the oral arms which are structures that surround the mouth and finally the tentacles; which surround the umbrela. The jellyfish moves by  rythmically contracting its entire body that absorbs water, which is inserted in its gastrovascular cavity and ejected, using it as a propellant.

Within their sensory organs amongst the more characteristic ones is found the estatosistos which informs the jellyfish of its body positioning , and the fotoreceptoras cells located at the base of the tentacles; which trespond to stimuli mechanical or quimcal stimuli

Its defensive system which has allowed the jellyfish to live at least 6000 million years is composed by the nematocysts which are located within capsules that are filled with toxins;  immersed in the liquid, there is a hollow filament enrolled into a spiral; which if physically or chemically  stimulated it develops in its interior a large pressurized force that projecting its filament and crosses or wraps its prey with an additional burden of venom which can cause paralisis or death.

Sea turtles while diving in Playa del Carmen

While diving in Playa del Carmen one of the most popular marine species for our divers is the sea turtles . Phantom divers find turtles every day here in Playa del Carmen, and the best thing is that they are not afraid of the camera. Sea turtles are reptiles, and need to go outside to the surface in order to breathe.They are animals that can live a great number of years, (it is estimated that about 100). 

Amongst the sea turtles that can be found snorkeling or diving on the reefs of Playa del Carmen is the hawksbill turtle, green turtle and loggerhead turtles. 

 

• Hawksbill Turtle: the turtles are smaller, characterized by its nose like that of a hawk's beak. This turtle can reach up to 90 cm long. 

• Green Turtle, have a shell with an oval-shape, and can measure up to 1.20 m. The name of 'green' is not due to the color of its shell, rather the green color of its meat 

• Loggerhead turtles: ls characterized by its large head and the heart-shaped shell. They can measure up to 115 cm. 

Sea turtles are very threatened animals, both in its natural environment, the sea, and the terrestrial environment. When they exit to spawn, is where they are the most vulnerable. The percentage of babies who survive is very low (1 or 2 of every 1000 is estimated). Currently, the plundering of nests and the tourist development are causing more difficulties for the turtles.

BIOLUMINESCENCE at nigth dives!!!

Bioluminescence is the ability of some organisms to produce light. Bioluminescence is a chemical reaction which requires the interaction of two  proteins: luciferin and luciferase. These proteins react together in the presence of oxygen, and cause a cold light as the reaction.
The ligth produced is very intense and is concentrated in a small area of the animal.The ligth can be seen from green to blue, which is the most frequent, or sometimes can also be seen in red and amber.

Noctiluca miliaris is a unicellular organism which causes most phosphorescence phenomena in the sea, it is the bacteria responsable for the ligth produced  when shaking the hands at nogth under the sea. This is a wonderful experience 100%  recommended if you are interested you have to come to Playa del Carmen, Mexico and try out of night dives which we offer on a daily basis here at Phantom Divers.

There are three  main types of bioluminescence:

• The intracelular which is generated by specialized cells of the body of some species and whose light is emitted through the skin.

• The extracellular occurs from the reaction between luciferin and luciferase outside the body.

• The luminous bacteria simbiosis occurs in several parts of the body where animals have  have photophores and keep the luminescent bacteria. Some species produce continuous light whose intensity can be regulated through the nervous system.
