We would like to write a special thank you note for our dear friends from Argentina who started diving on this Wednesday 19th until Sunday 23rd, and especially to Gonzalo Viamonte who was our contact there and helped us organize this whole trip!

Not only did we enjoy four different dives in Playa del Carmen, where we saw turtles, tarpons and barracudas, but also in Cozumel, for four different dives too, where we got to admire the breathtaking coral reef as well as the huge coral walls and amazing caves in Palancar Gardens.

We also went cavern diving in our extremely beautiful Cenotes! We did 2 thrilling dives with torches in order to discover some thousands years old stalactites and stalagmites, where salt water and fresh water mix… letting us to admire the halocline effect.
Some lucky few also went for an adventurous night dive in Playa, to close this great experience!

All of Phantom Divers’ staff had a really great time diving with all of you in Playa del Carmen and is looking forward to seeing you again very soon for funny dives with outgoing but also very professional instructors!

PHANTOM DIVERS AND THE PLEASURES OF PLAYA DEL CARMEN..BY:MORGANATRAVELS

Is Playa Del Carmen the best diving ever? No. But, we've been diving here several times and enjoyed our dives each time. The sites can range from shallow 35' to deep 100+'. The soft corals are in decent shape and there are lots of fish. My personal favorite is the quantity of large turtles that I have seen. This trip was no exception - on one dive we spotted EIGHT turtles, some swimming by, some eating, most within 10' of me! I love to dive Playa because of the turtles!! The excellent vis, pleasant drift (what a wonderfully lazy way to do a dive-lol!), soft corals, lots of fish, lobsters, eels and TURTLES make Playa an area that I enjoy coming back to again & again. We'll be there the end of April for another long weekend of diving.

The capt takes your weightbelt & gear so that you can climb into the boat unencumbered. He switches your gear to a new tank, then before heading to the next site hands out bottled water . The sites are within minutes of the dive shop and the beach is always within visual. This doesn't translate to shore dive & save the boat fare though - keep in mind the reefs are a bit of a swim and with the drift you & your equipment would have quite the walk back! We left around 9am, did 2 dives & were back at the shore around noonish each day . If you are doing multiple days of diving you can leave your equipment at the shop.

Thru the shop you can do Cenotes & Cozumel as well. We have done both in the past. Also, if you are there in the winter months you can do a Bull Shark dive . Our scheduling didn't allow us to particpate, but several diving with us had and loved it.

We've been diving a long time & enjoy a variety of dives. Because of the staff (& I certainly haven't named them all!) at Phantom this deserves an EXCELLENT rating. Again, there are better dives in the world - but, that's certainly no reason to dismis these, that would be the equivalent of avoiding other works by Michelangelo because they aren't the Sistine Chapel!!!! Whether you are a novice or an old jaded diver these are some fun dives and this is a GREAT STAFF!

ABOUT WHALE SHARK DIET...

The whale shark is a filter feeder — one of only three known filter feeding shark species (along with the basking shark and the megamouth shark). It feeds on phytoplankton, macro-algae, plankton, krill and small nektonic life, such as small squid or vertebrates. The many rows of teeth play no role in feeding; in fact, they are reduced in size in the whale shark. Instead, the shark sucks in a mouthful of water, closes its mouth and expels the water through its gills. During the slight delay between closing the mouth and opening the gill flaps, plankton is trapped against the dermal denticles which line its gill plates and pharynx. This fine sieve-like apparatus, which is a unique modification of the gill rakers, prevents the passage of anything but fluid out through the gills (anything above 2 to 3 mm in diameter is trapped). Any material caught in the filter between the gill bars is swallowed. Whale sharks have been observed "coughing" and it is presumed that this is a method of clearing a build up of food particles in the gill rakers.

Eagle rays...

They are excellent swimmers and are able to jump several metres above the surface. Compared with other rays, they have long tails, and well-defined rhomboidal bodies. They are viviparous, giving birth to up to six young at a time. They range from 48 centimetres (19 in) to 9.1 metres (30 ft) in length.[1]
The manta rays are the largest members of the ray family, ranging up to 6.7 m (22 ft) from wing tip to wing tip and weighing up to 1,350 kg (3,000 lb). They inhabit the tropical seas of the world and are often observed around coral reefs. You have the opportunity of see them with whale sharks. The season start from may to september. Join us!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!

I haven't forgotten about you and everyone at Phantom Divers.

I still need to get the correct software to transfer the digital video tape image to a computer file so I can put it on CD-R or DVD for you.

Don't give up on me ... it'll happen, I just don't know how soon.

I showed all my u/w video to the guys at my local dive shop (2 cenote dives, reef dive, and shark dive).

They all thought Charlie and I were loco crazy diving unprotected with 24 BULL SHARKS !! Way cool !!!

Hi Phantom Guys! BIG thanks to all of you great phantoms who made our holiday in Mexico to such a nice memory. We had the best time with you guys and we really hope that we can come back to do some more diving with you. When you get the taste of Yucatan diving it's hard to just leave it. :) Especially we will never forget the most awsome dive ever - the one with fourteen bull sharks! To all of you thinking about diving with Phantom Divers, all we can say is DO IT! The staff is friendly, flexible and loads of fun and the prices are the best in Playa del Carmen.
